Many women's gums swell and bleed easily during pregnancy — this is called pregnancy gingivitis. Morning sickness and frequent snacking also raise the risk of cavities.
Daily care
- Brush twice a day with a soft brush and floss daily
- After vomiting, rinse with water instead of brushing straight away
- Swap sweet snacks for fruit, yoghurt or nuts
- Drink plenty of water
Is dental treatment safe?
- Check-ups and cleanings are safe during pregnancy
- The second trimester (months 4-6) is the most comfortable time for treatment
- Urgent treatment can be done at any time if needed
- Always tell your dentist that you are pregnant
Why it matters
A mother's oral health is linked to her overall health, so gum problems during pregnancy shouldn't be ignored.
When to see a dentist
If you're planning a pregnancy, it's best to have a check-up beforehand.
