Every time you have something sugary, your mouth produces acid for about half an hour. That's why snacking on sweets all day does more harm than having them in one go.
Tooth-friendly foods
- Milk, yoghurt and cheese — rich in calcium
- Vegetables and crunchy fruit — chewing boosts saliva
- Eggs, fish and nuts
- Water — it keeps the mouth clean
Foods to limit
- Fizzy drinks and packaged juices
- Chocolate, sweets and sticky treats
- Chips and biscuits that cling to teeth
- Tea with sugar, sipped all day
Small habits that help
Have sweets with meals and rinse with water afterwards. Use a straw for fizzy drinks, and brush again if you eat before bed.
When to see a dentist
At your regular check-up, your dentist can review your diet and advise on your cavity risk.
